Hurricane
Warning
What is a hurricane
warning?
A hurricane watch is issued for coastal
residents that could experience hurricane
conditions within 24 hours. During a
warning, a hurricane has already formed
in the gulf or ocean with winds of at
least 74 mph.
Tips to follow
in a hurricane warning
By the time a hurricane warning is declared,
your family should have completed all
of the steps mentioned in the Hurricane
Watch section. If the storm escalated
to a hurricane before a watch was issued,
follow all the instructions for a Hurricane
Watch in addition to the other steps
listed here. Be more than ready to do
whatever local authorities decide is
the next step for your area.
Your family should begin preparing
for emergency instructions by taking
the following measures:
· Initiate the Family
Communications Plan
· Review the evacuation route
for your area
· Keep a battery-operated weather
radio on at all times and listen to
the television for additional instruction
if you have power
· Turn off major appliances to
reduce power "surge"
· Pack important papers and disaster
supply kit in the car
· Confirm reservations for hotel
or stay at friends and family
· Pack pet supplies and Kids
Activity Survival Kit in car
· Pack extra batteries in the
car to be used with radio and flashlights
· When inside stay away from
windows, skylights and glass doors
If emergency management asks residents
to evacuate:
· Secure your home by unplugging
appliances and turning off electricity
and the main water valve
· Elevate furniture to protect
it from flooding or move it to a higher
floor
· Tell someone outside of the
storm area where you are going
· Move garbage cans, deck furniture
and other large objects into your house
or garage or anchor them securely if
you have not already done so
· Lock up home and leave as soon
as possible
