Hurricane Watch

What is a hurricane watch?
A hurricane watch is issued for coastal residents that could possibly experience hurricane conditions within 36 hours. During a watch, the storm usually exists only as a tropical storm with the possible threat of turning into a hurricane.

Tips to follow in a hurricane watch
A hurricane watch is not the time to begin preparing for a hurricane. This should already be taken care of well in advance of the hurricane season; however, there are certain precautionary measures that should be followed during a hurricane watch:

· Review the Before the Storm section of the Hurricane Center
· Keep up with the storm by watching television progress reports
· Place batteries in your weather radio and flashlights
· Make sure your disaster supply kit is well-stocked and on hand
· Turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings in case of power outage
· Fill several jugs with fresh water – have one gallon per day for each member of the family
· Stock non-perishable foods and high-energy snacks
· Make sure medical prescriptions are filled and medicines are packed to go
· Make sure pets also have plenty of food and water and a place to go if your family evacuates
· Call and reserve a room in a hotel if family and friends are unable to house you if the storm turns into a hurricane
· Put gas in car
· Gather up important papers
· Bring in outdoor objects such as lawn furniture, toys and garden tools
· Anchor outdoor objects that cannot be brought inside
· Protect the outside of windows with shutters or plywood
· Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts
· Trim back dead or weak branches from trees
· Make sure that you have a phone that does not require power to operate (no cordless phones
· Move furniture or other valuables to a higher floor in the home to prevent flooding
